(I say all this with a smile and a hug) Love is open acceptance of what or whoever is present. Love is without judgment.... Possession is Passion. Possession is not the same as Love. Insecurity can lead to possessiveness. Judgment is not acceptance. Love is open. Possession is closed. Then you say that "in some cases it is not." There are different degrees of Love. Different types of Love. Hope that clues you in a little to an answer.....

Love is not possessive. Insecurities are possessive. If a person is insecure with him or herself then a possessive nature develops. They feel as though their mate will leave them at any moment, so they have to keep tabs on them to maintain a sense of well being. Those of us who are secure with themselves(as I am) don't waste time worrying about what our significant other is up to; because we know that they have a right to do whatever they wish to do - and will do what they feel they have to do with or without us in their lives. So why worry about something you can't control - focus on loving and respecting yourself first and the rest will work itself out. -peace.

because we don't want to lose our love but still we have to avoid being possessive because it can only losing our love itself so instead of being possessive, we have to trust them in order for them to stay.
