I took the EuroStar from Rome to Florence two weeks ago. Took about 1:45 minutes. You can take different kinds of trains that take different amounts of time. I feel the cost of the express train is worth it. You can do it on-line for a cost of only a few euros. You print out the ticket and you're ready to go. (You don't have to validate this ticket like you do when you buy a ticket at the station.)

Have a great trip.

The travel arrangements I made from Rome to Florence was by a Eurostar/EuroRail. This is like a glorified subway. It has more comfortable seats for longer trips like Rome to Florence. From the main train station in Rome, called Termini, to Florence, it takes about 1hr and 45 mins.
