i have 01 jetta 2.0 gls and the check enging light went on so i took it to a mechanic, he replaced the fuel filter and MAF sensor cause he said the code was saying low leanness limit exceeded.after a day the light went back on and it was consuming more gas and it was driving slower (it had a hard time accelerating).I took it back he replaced the fuel regulator. but it remains the same. i replaced the spark plugs and all of the four break pads and few days later the check engine light went off. there are times that it will drive normal but most of the time it has a hard time accelerating. and still it consumes more gas.i replaced the oxygen sensors but its still the same.i took it the dealer they said they're gonna have to check the ecm and its harness which is $98 per hour.thats after i paid $100 just to run a diagnostic.could it be that my fuel system just need some cleaning?

If VW ran the test and found the system to be in good order then it most likely is bad wiring. VW did have some problems wiring harness connections going to the ECM so if you have a bad connector it could be an intermittent problem. Also MAF has been an ongoing problem with that car. Did the shop reset the parameters to zero? If not the ECM is trying to work with bad information and could cause the problem. The dealer should be able to see that on their scan tool. Tough problem. Look for a German shop that does more VW and see if they have the correct scan tools.

I would find a different mechanic, if you had the fuel regulator, and the oxygen censors .

finda cheeper mechanic and an honest one I know that might take some tim by it will be worth it.
It wont hurt you have done all this other stuff put some fuel system cleaner in your car, it will be the cheapest thing you have done.

Have you looked into your exhaust system yet? Catalytic Converters can clog and cause problems, including a lit engine light. For your car, it shouldn't be more than a $300 job...on the high end.
