When I take my digital files to get printed at the photo developing shop, they always ask me this. Which is better for keeping the photos long term?

I prefer Matte Photos.

Glossy pictures look great when you first open the envelope...but once handled, never look as good again. And, if you do Frame them to avoid being contaminated by dust, dirt & fingerprints - They are hard to view properly due to the Glare that reflects off them, from Interior Lighting sources.

I think you should chose Matte. No matter where you will be storing them (photo album, picture frame, etc) they'll be easier to view and they won't stick to the protection. Also, fingerprints don't really show up on them! As far as which one lasts longer, I think they both can last as long as each other; it's up to you how well you're going to take care of them.
Hope this helps.

Actually no one is really better, it's all about your preference. I prefer matte to glossy as it's not sticky hence your pictures won't be sticked to plastic if you put it in old-style photo album.

I'd pick matt. Less obvious fingerprints and doesn't stick to the plastic film type photo albums.

I prefer matte photos, they tend to show less finger prints.

In my opinion, glossy looks MUCH better.
