Seems kind of like asking 10 people what their favorite movie is and hoping to get a consistent answer. Stylish is a very subjective term. One could argue that any B&W photographer worth his salt is sylish in some sense of the word. Another issue is that some people might think that sytyle (or flair) is the same thing as good craftsmanship. There are lots of people out there taking B&W images, but very few of them have actually mastered their craft.

No I have not. I started this stuff when I was 7 or 8 years old and I only had to know which button to push. As I grew up, my dad would present concepts to me one at a time so that I absorbed them without realizing that I was actually learning. I gave some basic instruction to several college friends and friends of friends who wanted to learn how to operate their cameras and move up a step. Does that count? I guess I have just evolved along with my interests and I never had time for a course anyhow. I tried to sign up for a course in Photoshop at a university about 25 miles from home, but they had ridiculous prerequisites (art history before Photoshop???) because it is considered a course for "majors only," and I had no interest in taking the prerequisites in order to take a class on Photoshop. I've gotten by with a little help from my friends here.

Depends on your definition of 'stylish' and in my case, I'd vote for Richard Avedon. His fashion and advertising work is classic.

But I also love Ansel Adams' 'style' too...

Bambi Cantrell has some superb B&W photos under her wedding sections

http://www.cantrellportrait.com/
Enter the page and click on menu to access the wedding images.

The site is in flash otherwise I would have provided a direct link to the image itself.

Avedon or Weston. But I agree with one of the answers that someone submitted. Who is to say since it is still ongoing. Some of my personal b/w's have been chosen for a book and I have received incredible comments about them.

Depends on what style. And when will there ever be a "best" of anything? Is milk better then a pocket knife?
