Why can't they just have respect for others beliefs and leave them alone. Why should I have to be accosted at the bus station or walking to a baseball game? I don't like to rude but it seems like the only way to keep them away. Why do they think that people care? I'm not speaking of any group specifically, just the general group of harrassers who feel the need to spout there beliefs to people who need to walk past them.

Why do people try to convert people? For many believers of most faiths, it's because the world is seen as a sinking ship, thanks to sin. If you were on a sinking ship, how could you -not- try to tell others where the lifeboat is?

In this analogy, it shouldn't be surprising that keeping quiet and leaving people alone doesn't make a whole lot of sense to believers.

However, this tends to become confusing when you have many people pointing you to many different lifeboats. And when you don't believe the ship is sinking in the first place, it can become downright annoying.

Sadly though, some believers tend to become quite zealous and miss the point entirely - it becomes more about coercion and judgement and "adding to the ranks" and less about selfless rescue, and thus you get accosted at bus stops and baseball games. It's frustrating because it does more harm than good, and gives people the wrong impression about a faith and all the other not-so annoying people who follow it. The other responses to this question illustrate that.

Not coincidentally, those harrassing "believers" tend to be the most vocal and visible and stereotypical, and the least loving. It's too bad for everyone, whether you are a believer or not.

Think about it this way. I believe that Jesus died for me and you. If you don't know this you will eternally have to live without God in a place that is ..... how can I put it .... not very nice. I don't want that to happen to you. I want you to be happy - not just in this life - but in the next as well. That is why I tell you. If you're not interested then at least I tried (and I'll try again if I have the chance) What type of person would I be if this is what I believed and I just let you die without even trying to save you life? This is why Christians do it. For us it is a matter of life and death. If trying to save your life makes you rude toward me - it's the chance I'll take. You're worth it. I can't speak for people of other religions.

Well..
This social fact is related to the idea that a human is a social animal.

People do not like to be alone in their beliefs. Even for the smallest things. They tend to convert others to follow their ways in order to prove to themselves that they're right.

They like to be in a group, and the slightest difference makes them very confused about it.

The Bible tells us Christians to go in to the world and preach the gospel. now at the same time if you go to a restaurant and the food is great the service is fantastic they even go out of their way to personalized your order. after you leave the restaurant i bet you would tell as many people as possible so they can experience the same service that you did. In the same way as Christians God is so good to us that we can't keep it to our self we have to share it with the world. MY wife was 6 months pregnant and she was found with a tumor on her brain after surgery the doc gave her 1 yrs to leave. we pray to our God and He gave us a peace that she would be OK. it has been more than 2 yrs since the doc told my wife she would die in a year.

Well, most religions believe that it is their duty to pass their word on. And they also believe that this is the right way to live so they need to show others the 'right' way. But, yes I believe that we should respect each other and not harass people because they don't share our beliefs.

He who accosts others for conversion is in most of the cases himself or herself is a convert. Foreign Christian missionaries spend lot of money to get people converted through the Churches located in India.

The Pope during his visit to India on 8th November 1998 had declared that during the third millenium they would Christianise Asia by conversion as they had done to Europe and Africa/Americas during first and second millenia respectively. Conversion to other religions is banned in China. The missionary Churches can not dare do it in Afganistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malayasia, Thailand, Mongolia, which are Islamic countries and Japan and Sri Lanka where churches have limited sphere.

Taking advantage of our liberal attitude Pope could dare to make such a statement in India about Indian Hindus and we have tolerated it.

Conversion is a big industry in India which thrives on foreign donations. Our self-esteem is so low that we do not oppose such activities collectively.

You rightly said that those who try to convert others they have no respect for the faith of others. People who have no respect to our faith are converting our brethren exploiting their lack of education and poverty. It is a shame to the Churches and the allied NGOs who do conversion in the name of service to the down-trodden. It includes Mother Theresha and her missionaries who convert innocent children in the name of providing solace. God forgive them for not knowing what they are doing.

Every Muslim has a duty from His God to tell non believers about the religion because it is the right of every soul to get the message. But one should not feel offended as the Muslims just convey the message, they can't force any one.

I'm mormon. Am I trying to convert you? Nope.

Just say no thanks....it's the same as going into Old Navy and having them ask you if you'd like to save 10% by signing up for a credit card. "NO THANKS."

Or maybe give it a chance, they're doing it because they must treasure the message they're trying to share with you. Be flattered. Not annoyed.

People are ultimately insecure in their own beliefs and try to convert others to help convince themselves. They have not idea how subjective they are and don't want to know.

I tell people about Jesus because I love them and want them to have the Love and forgiveness of God in thier lives like I do in mine. I want people to know that if they die tonight they will spend eternity with Jesus because they have been saved. I want to warn poeple of hell and the torture that awaits them if they continue to reject Jesus. I do it out of love and a desire to see people made whole and right in God. If they tell me to leave them alone I do and I pray for them.
