keep it cool and dry in a fridge. If it browns, its probably old or too moist. Lettuce isn't meant for longevity.
you could whack the stem-core on a hard surface and extract it from the base ... it will be keep longer.
NEVER KEEP YOUR LETTUCE IN WATER OR WET. THOSE PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT!

Don't ever slice into your lettuce. When you're ready to use some, tear the leaves off and then cut them as necessary.
Keep lettuce in the cold part of your fridge, preferably the part specified for vegetables, in a plastic bag or container, but make sure there's no moisture or ice in contact with the leaves, or they will brown very quickly. Tupperware make a really good lettuce crisper that keeps moisture away from the leaves and my lettuces keep for at least two weeks in there. My mum just uses a plastic bag and gets a good week from hers, but she ensures the bag stays dry.

Go to bed bath and beyond or any cooking store and ask them if they have a lettuce bowl that keeps it fresh. Its really cool and it works great!
you put the lettuce in and there is a place on it were you pump out the air.

You can purchase organic or Farm fresh lettuce in the plastics 16 oz (1 lb) containers. It's prewashed and lasts much longer than a head of lettuce and tastes great on sandwiches also.

lettuce can only last for so long, 2 or 3 days it's going to brown anyway. so it's nothing you can do...

Don't use a knife to cut it. It browns from exposure to the metals. Just tear the leaves with your hands.

Never cut it. Only TEAR it. Also, rinse it with cold water after tearing. Keep in a sealed container in a cold place (though do NOT freeze it!).

Put it in a plastic bag before you put it in your vegie crisper.
My housemate does this and it keeps for like a month. Don't know why it works but it does.
