Well- when you ask questions like this- you are unlikely to get any good, honest answers.
You could ask- why should you care?
In the end all people reveal themselves. You have to satisfy yourself with what you know in your heart to be true.
The previous statements sound storebought- but they are true.
Everyone wears masks- some have several masks. And sometimes the masks aren't necessarily a bad thing.
I wear a completely different mask to my job than what wear out to club or bar. The mask I wear at work is of a nice girl who gets her job done on time with little mistakes- a girl who doesn't gossip- why? Because I work in one of those offices that comedians tell horror stories about- too much politicking, too little focus on the job- the less certain coworkers know about the true me- the safer I am from cubicle rat backstabbing.
At a club or bar- I pretend to have a good time and enjoy dancing. When really, I'm a homebody who'd rather be cooking a good meal, watching a great movie and talking to a good friend in my quiet little house.
My true and best friends know the real me. And those are the only people who matter. They also know my masks, and forgive me my masks, for they too bear their own depending on certain situations.
And, that's most likely how it works for everyone else too.

I think it has something to do with how you were raised.
I also think some people are stuck in a mental "high school" theme for ever.
Some people don't like themselves either. So they pretend to be some one they aren't. They figure that if they can fool some one they may be able to fool themselves. But it never works.
I am me, I do as I want and always will. If people don't like the way I talk or dress or what I drive and live in they don't have to come around. Thats how I feel.
Maturity is what it boils own to.

They put on their fake social mask because they want to act cool and be cool. It really irritates me when people do that because they end up making a fool out of themselves in the long run. They don't realise that people will think much better of them by being themselves.

In general I agree with you...but most people have to play different roles during different social occassions. Being a father to 2 young girls, makes me wear a "different" mask at times. Not neccessarily a fake one.
As long as I stay true to myself and to the people who are close to me, who really cares?

Some people cant handle if they let others in if they will be safe, it
could be safety issues, it could be they were taught it, it could be
that some people are afraid of rejection if they don't accept themselves for who they are. This is a difficult question that everyone will have a different answer for. So don't be shocked, when you get plenty of answers for this questions

I'm always myself, I'm Goth and proud of it!
Other's stare sometimes but at least I'll be remembered for being true and honest to myself instead of looking as if I came off a factory line of clones.

Same reason they drink - they're cowards. They have to act like someone else -They can't really be who they are - so they try to be who you want them to be. or they act like someone THEY want to be. I call it the 'chameleon' syndrome. OR they drink so they can be themselves. If they are embarassed, later they can say "Dude, it was the beer." Chickens.
Deep down, we're all afraid of rejection. That's why you have to love yourself first. If you don't like yourself, no one else will either.

because they care to much of what other people think. They don't understand that we only live once and that we all die alone

maybe because they have low self-esteem, scared about getting rejected if they show how they really look like or just don't want anyone they don't know to know.
