The Seven Churches were actual churches at one time
and some ruins still stand yet today. Each church represented an attitude that would be expressed in each Church Age throughout the following 2,000 years until the last and present Age which is called the Laodicean Church Age.
We're now living in that last church age called Laodicea which actually means "People's Rights" and that is the spirit of this last Age. As you can see, everyone wants to have their "rights" especially in the past 100 years or so.
Everything runs in sevens in the Book of Revelations.
The Seven Church Ages also had Seven Messengers, one for each Church Age.
St. Paul was the first Messenger to the Age.
There is a great book on the subject called
The Exposition of the Seven Church Ages.
It is written by William M. Branham

The seven churches in Revelation are 7 real churches that existed in those cities at the time Jesus gave the Revelation to John the apostle somewhere around 95ad. They also represent 7 periods of church history i.e. the first church ephesus represents the early church up until 100ad the second church sardis represents the persecuted church etc... Finally the 7 churches represent 7 types of churches today. There are churches who have lost their first love like ephesus and churches that are persecuted like sardis. I hope that helps.

God talked to me and straightened me out on this question.
The 7 "churches" are seven FRANCHISES of "Church's Chicken" in the Chicago area. They are still around but hadn't been built yet at the time of Christ's death.
Hope this helps.

No, they are New Testament churches and they were not specifically written to the churches they are addressed to but in addition to any church that finds themself in the same condition. They are distinctively warnings for the churches Christ established.
