They probably didn't want a Roman spear in the chest.
Have you ever stood by and watched some wrong because you were afraid for yourself? Self-preservation is a strong instinct.
Judge not lest ye also be judged good Christian.

Only someone truly selfless and enlightened would have died for Jesus. Jesus was the enlightened one of that bunch. His disciples probably didn't lose all their doubts until they saw his resurrected body come back from the tomb. Now whether they died to their egos by seeing Christ overcome death is a good question. Their writings were certainly inspired, but I believe can only understood and seen with spiritual eyes. The bible, from the perspective of ego, is stock full of ego. But seeing behind the words, with the eyes of Spirit, there is great and endless Truth.
So even if the disciples weren't completely selfless, and willing to die with Christ that day, I think they fulfilled their spiritual destiny -- and purpose. The New Testament is a guide for those who are dying to ego; those who've been given spiritual eyes of understanding.
Scripture is completely incomprehensible to egos. Egos make a monstrosity out of the Bible, and do so in the name of Jesus.
BUT: 'Forgive them for they know not what they do.'
Blessings..

Jesus' mission was to die for us, not the other way around. Jesus fully understood his duty, and as such did not struggle or otherwise try to escape. His followers were obeying his wishes in not taking actions against the pharisees and the romans. Furthermore, taking revenge, or retaliating in any way is not christian behavior. Remember, turn the other cheek.

You are right they would have died and accomplished nothing. See after Jesus died a holicost happened. Do you think the believers(which weren't as many as you think) could have gotten past the mob, let alone the military.
No they had to live on so they could spred the message.
The Christian Holicost lasted over 600 yrs.

Only one stayed with him from his capture thru execution, along with his mother and Mary Magdelene and a few other family members. This was not a safe place to hang out and police brutality was usually murder not a beating. What the bible was pointing out by showing their cowardice in part was this: our entire belief and system of worship came from such persons as you say. They were simple, flawed humans and "look at the hope that gives us" yadda yadda yadda. They went on to raise the dead and cast out demons, along with sacrificing their lives once they became spiritually 'mature'.

well at that point the believers weren't filled with the holy spirit so they didn't quite understand who Jesus was. It was god's will that Jesus die on the cross inorder to save humanity from its sins. At pentecost the holy spirit guided the aposltes to spread the gospel of christ so they didn't "propagate" the message.

If you are watching a prisoner get beat in jail by the police there, you know better not to help your fellow jailmate. If you do, you both get beat harder then before.
