I am taking a medical transcription course on line. I have having a hard time with the medical terminology. I have always learned better 'hands-on'. Is this something that will become easier once I start actually doing it? Or is it something that I have to get down before I start?

It is going to be difficult to master the skills needed if you do not have a good background in the terminology. You will progress infinitely faster if you take the terminology course first, at a local college. There are many thousands of medical terms, abbreviations, etc. and you simply cannot teach yourself these things without exposure to either a medical environment or a classroom.

The only hands-on is your fingers on the keyboard. It is a lot of brain work. You have to know the medical terminology before you start working or you will spend a lot of your time looking up words in your medical dictionary instead of typing. You also have to know your shorthand abbreviations. Hopefully your course will give you a lot of transcription practice so you can get up to speed before your first job. Best wishes.

I learned the terminology first and it was much easier that way. Good luck to you.
