These people are not attempting to make fun of those with Alzheimer's. In all probability, they have fear that they may have the disease and are attempting to shun their fears. However, you can tell them that your mother has the disease and that you are offended when people make fun of those with the disease. I say that I am senile because there is fear of that with me. I joke, but there is much fear. If you can, try to understand them. Of course, if they are poking fun, use duck tape to shut them up.

You could say
"My mom has alzheimers" after they say it.
Or:
After they say it you could say in a half-joking way "One day you might offend somene by saying that" if they ask how, you can just tell them "My mom has alzheimers and it's really hard on me." Or if they act like a jerk, punch 'em in the face...HA!
Then you could tell them how you feel, that they're not funny.
It's hard, and I really feel sorry for you because I think I would go insane if someone I loved could look right at me and now know who I am anymore. I'm proud of your strength and it shows you care about your mom because you were offended.
I hope you can get an answer that will help you!

you have to tell them that you find the comment pains you a bit, because your mom has it. It is not an uncommon comment, just like blonde moment, or seniors moment, but for you I can understand it is a sensitive spot. I have an uncle who is sick with this and it is so hard on the rest of the family. That is why I opened this question. I have been looking into it this evening. I was just at http://205.234.239.246/index.htm... There has been some relief. I am going to order a case of 4 for him and see if it has affect. For the $100, it might be such a huge weight off my aunt....

Don't be mean about it as this person would not be saying it to insult you or your mother or any one with alzheimers.
Just maybe tell them straight out " My mother has Alzheimers. So please don't use that term."
I am sure they will be embarrased about the situation and apoligise.
Good luck! :)

You need to try to not take it so personally, I know easier said than done. We all have made comments that are insensitive. It must be hard to hear these comments when a loved one is suffering. Tell them you do not apprec. that remark., they will think twice next time.

Ignore it. No harm was intended. If they were to say they were having a blonde moment I wouldn't be offended. It's just an expression.

Tell them that using such terms is offensive to you because of your situation. Assure them that you knew that they meant no harm, but to refrain from using such phrases in the future.

You let it slide. Don't go crucifying people for a lame joke that wasn't intended to be offensive/ insensitive.
(And I don't want to receive any nasty emails from people who had a relative that was crucified!)

don't take it personally. My brother committed suicide by hanging himself and when people say " I might as well kill myself" or "im just going to hang myself" i shrug it off because not everyone knows my life and not everyone is going to tip toe around the facts

If you tell them she has it and that their comment offends you because of that, they'll probably stop. If they don't, they're not worth continuing to talk to.
