Although 'the shaved head' was originally applied for good hygiene, it progressed to being executed as a means of 'humility of the military individual.'
It also strips the individual of his individuality and allows everyone to be on par, or on an equal level with each other. As the basic-training uniform is also standard and applied to all recruits, allowing everyone the identical or uniformed look, so likewise is the shaved head.
In concluding: It is for personal hygiene, uniformity, and this promotes team work, unity and Esprit de Corps.

It's for several reasons. First is to prevent lice, and other critters. Also, if one gets a tick, or a leach, it's easier to deal with if one's got a buzz cut. The second is psychological. It's a way of "breaking down" the individual mentality. Having identical haircuts, (usually radically different from what one's used to) is a grooming equivalent to wearing a uniform. It's an equalizer, that makes one psychologically ready to function as part of a team.

The same reason everyone gets the same clothes, the same gear and the same everything: uniformity. The best way to get a group of individuals to function as a cohesive unit in the short amount of time they are given in boot camp is to take away all of the superficial aspects of individuality.
Once you're done with boot, there is a certain degree of individuality allowed in hairstyle.

Aside from the hygiene issue, entering the military there is a sociological need to separate the recruit from all that he is familiar with. Basically he is dehumanized and then re-humanized with his unit as a group so they work as a team. It makes them work and play well together better. Check out your Sociology 101 book. It's the same for prisons too.

They shave your head so you can lose your identity, so all the men will look alike. This way it's easier to brainwash you to kill.

For a better military appearance.
Except of course with females, who don't have to but then scream that they're equal.
