ive been wondering that forever. it sucks and its discrimination. when its bad guys say that we are the sneakiest people around. but when its something cool like combat, "you will get everybody killed" i think i could be a cav. scout but tell that to my husband, he gets so mad. i hate the army cuz my husband is in it and they treat him like a slave, but if they passed the law tomorrow saying females can go combat, ill be the first one there.

First, our society is not ready for our female soldiers to be front line combat troops. Second, most women do not have the physical strength to meet the training requirements. You carry a 75 pound ruck, a weapon, and at times a team member. Not to mention, it is a distraction that can not be afforded during combat when a woman has "special needs" that she must take care of. Women play a very important role in many other dangerous, and highly skilled services such as the CIA, NSA, Secret Service and so on. But in all honesty, a front line infiltration unit is not really an ideal place for them. The men also tend to have an instinct to protect a woman, and it can cause problems during operations, as they fail to pay attention to their own task when concerned that the woman may be in trouble.

Women are barred by Congress from serving in military specialties that require regular contact with the enemy at or forward of the front lines. Presently this includes Infantry, Special Forces, and Armor units. Some combat engineer and field artillery units are also not open to women.

It is true that females are barred from direct combat jobs, but it's a little bit confusing as they do serve in other specialties that do lead to direct combat. MPs & engineers for instance. I've heard some stories about women on convoy duty (I assume transportation or mechanics) that have gotten well deserved bronze stars, and one silver star. They serve as combat pilots, fighter pilots even.
The practical issue in combat units in the field is that you live literally on top of each other with no privacy at all - not when you go to the bathroom, sleep, not ever & for potentially weeks.

I'm going with Steve W for the regulation and Ed for the reason why it is that way. I do want to add that Scouts fall under the restricted combat mos's also.

The average male can carry a bigger pack the the average female.
Plus, women's naughty bits need more maintenance in the field.
