depends on the breed of cat and dog. cats are generally slower than dogs because of shorter legs and weaker muscles, but can probably outrun the smaller breeds like dauschunds and chihuahuas. no cat is going to beat a greyhound in a footrace, unless you start talking about wild animals in which case of course cheetahs take the cake.

over short distances cats would win the race though because they accelerate much faster. although their agility and reflexes are better honed than dogs'. so cats often easily get away from dogs in a chase. but put the two in a foot race and your average dog will beat your average cat almost every time.

Well I know from personal experience...that is when my cat and dog start to go at it (and the dog is the instigator) that cat runs hella faster than the dog which is could for her and shes a clever little one...but she's a cat should I expect anything less lol.

My dog was chasing a cat around my house and my dog never got close to the cat. It was very funny. so I think a cat is faster than a dog.

Cats have more agility, and a cat can temporarily sprint much faster then a dog. But in a race a dog would probably win because all feline animals tire themselves out with their quick dashes

It depends on how fit the animal is. Like a fat dog, can never out run a thin fit cat, vice versa. even if the dog is bigger.
