i have read up between this 2 planes and found out that their length and width are about the same,so why would boeing make a plane that is almost the same as the 777?

to bostonia : i really understand your answer so you are trying to say that their length and width are around the same but is only the material are different?

They're hardly the same plane. The 787 is primarily constructed of composite materials, the first airliner to be built that way. It should be quite a bit more fuel efficient than the 777-200.

tecnology!!.. thats the quote... imagine 2 cars. in the same trip one spend 100 liters of fuel, the other spends only 70... second, all the sistems (you dont see as a pax) makes the plane safer.. in other words, they may look the same, but they are not.... and maybe the bigest diference is that the 777 is made for large to xlarge trips (transcontintental 10 to 15 hours) and the 787 is just for medim large to large trips ( 5 to 6 hours)
