If you've had any training in music what so ever you've been taught you have to loose your accent when you sing so you can be more in a way "reachable" to fans. Does that make since? I hope my answer helped

Well, that's not entirely true. The stronger a speaking accent is the more you'll hear it in their singing voice. You'll still hear a "twang" in a country singer's voice that you won't hear in a New York pop singer's voice.
But people with only slight accents do tend to sound the same while singing because when you're singing a song correctly you have to follow a very rigid set of rules: you sing specific notes in a specific order and each note has it's own specific pitch. While talking people create their own "melody" with a rhythm, pitch, and emphasis that is uniquely their own while in a song the composer has written out the rhythm, pitch, and emphasis and everyone has to follow it and by all following it then they begin to sound alike.

I agree, we have known this for years. In some instances accents are noticeable, but when you hear ABBA, you can't tell me they sound like they have accents! Tom Jones doesn't sound like he has an accent until he speaks the words in a song. Bob Marley - yes, very noticeable. The Scottish band the Proclaimers really sounded like they had strong accents.

Because if you sing the way you talk, you lose audience, a general tone is better to reach a bigger public, besides if you sing a pop song you are spectated to sound like certain people did in the past. Just Commercial Strategy.

When you have singing lessons you're taught to use Italian vowel sounds because they are the most amenable to projection. That means the distinctive vowel sounds of different regions don't come through.
