Yes, but its rare...
Monozygotic twins are genetically identical (unless there has been a mutation in development) and they are the same gender. (On extremely rare occasions, an original XXY zygote may form monozygotic boy/girl twins by dropping the Y chromosome for one twin and the extra X chromosome for the other.) Monozygotic twins generally look alike. Fine physical details such as fingerprints will differ. As they mature, identical twins often become less alike because of lifestyle choices or external influences.

Identical twins occur when one egg divides and becomes 2 babies who are exactly alike from gender to looks and even have identical DNA. Twins who are not exactly alike in all these ways are called Fraternal twins and can, given the right circumstances, even have different fathers and birth dates - although that doesn't happen often but in short - NO brother and sister twins are Fraternal not Identical.

What we call identical twins aren't actually as identical as we once thought. Also, gender isn't sex. So yes, they can be different genders. Just like you can have twins born of the same zygote that have different sexual orientations, different taste in music, different ideas about politics ect ect.

There have been rare reports of male and female "identical twins"
it appears the original fertilized egg may have a significant genetic defect such as extra chromosomes, or fragments of sex chromosomes that become stuck to one of the non-sex chromosomes. In some cases the defects may arise early in development - after fertilization, but either before or after the twinning occurs. In all cases, both twins arose from a single fertilized egg.

Not at all. Identical twins are what happens when one fertilized egg splits in two. The genetic make up of each new embryo is exactly the same meaning that the sex chromosomes would also have to be the same. You'll either get 2 boys or 2 girls. If you get one of each, they are fraternal twins and what happened is that 2 separate eggs in the woman got fertilized by 2 separate sperm from the man.

Identical twins can't be different genders because they orginate from the same egg and sperm. Wikipedia has a great explaination of this, check it out.

No. Identical twins have the exact same DNA and gender chromosomes. But Fraternal Twins can either be same or different gender.

No they can not be identical. Twins of different genders are called fraternal twins. I should know I have had two sets.

the people saying that they know identical twins that are different genders are very confused. the only way it is possible is if one of them has a sex change.
even in the dropping of the y chromosome that traci talks about below, if the y chromosome is dropped in one of them, then by definition, they have a different chromosome set, and are not identical.
again, the only way is through a sex change operation
