Bipolar symptoms include a high degree of mental and physical accomplishments followed by a period of deep depression. Many Doctors and Lawyers are bipolar and can actually accomplish a lot during the high activity period.

Medications are available to smooth out the bumps in life and prevent such highs and lows in activity. Bipolar was formerly called manic-depressive disorder but health care workers did not like this distasteful description. So we now call it bipolar.

People diagnosed with bi-polar disorder exhibit several symptoms. Some show mainly depression while others have a combination of manic and depressive symptoms.

Manic symptoms include drastic mood changes- really happy or silly one moment to very irritable or angry the next. Having the feeling of grandiosity or feeling like you are "superwoman" and nothing can hurt you is another symptom. People diagnosed as being bi-polar talk quite rapidly and changes topics rapidly, has an increase in energy- often going long periods of time (days)without sleep. They also take risks- perhaps take drugs, drive recklessly, abuse alcohol, gamble, etc.

In a depressed state, bi-polar people are irritable, sad, may think of suicide or death, complain of physical ailments that may or may not be "real", have major changes in sleeping or eating patterns. Losing interest in your favorite activities is another symptom.

People who are unfamiliar with the disorder have an especially hard time understanding those with it. It is a challenge to keep a job or establish lasting friendships- there are so many ups and downs in moods. It is not unusual for those with this disorder to just get up and take an unplanned trip far away for no reason.

This illness can affect anyone and medication can help prevent depression as well as help reduce the number and severity of manic episodes. It is challenging to diagnose.

It can act like depression but its not.. it usually comes as "highs and Lows".. that can change by minutes, days or months. A person when "up" has high energy but van get "aggravated "easily. The "lows will act like depression. Because it can change in a sentence it affects family and friends as they always feel on guard.

I hope this helps, here is a website that might give you more comprehensive information. If you think you have the disorder.. know there is help! The medication is amazing. If you have a family member or friend that suffers from it..knowledge is everything.

Symptoms can be close to schizophrenia but when treated by the same medication used for schizophrenia the symptoms can often get worse.

Jumping from one extreme to the other (depressed one day and really happy the other for no real reason), energy fluctuates.... a few other things - these are typical.

It's like night and day. One minute cool to be around. The next minute very hard to get along with.

-Spends a lot of money on unneccessary items.
-Full of energy, can't stop moving--OR--can't get out of bed, can't move.
-Acts out of control.
-Talks nonstop.

Bipolar means that there are two sets of behaviors--one up, happy, hyperactive, and one down, depressed, can't get out of bed.

If you're concerned about someone, PLEASE talk to a doctor IMMEDIATELY!!! Bipolar disorder is VERY SERIOUS!!!
