I would wait until hi can walk and isn't in danger of falling out of the bed and not being able to help himself back up in the middle of the night or heaven forbid hurts himself and cant come tell you. If he isn't trying to climb out of the crib and is at risk of falling from it, which is higher up than a toddler bed then i would allow him to stay in his crib longer. It may not be that he hates the crib but what it represents .... aka bedtime, no more playing, no more mommy and daddy, not fun. In which case he would hate the toddler bed all the same.

Try to make his bed more inviting to him. Take him to pick out new sheets and a fuzzy new pillow. (Yes, babies can do this.) Give him a new toy to play with while he is laying in bed. I put my son in a toddler bed at 20 mos. when he showed signs of being ready. Give it a try now if you can. Keep the crib just in case. It takes patience and time, but he will get used to the change. I understand the developmental delays associated with DS as my niece has it also. I am also very educated when concerning childhood disabilities. By the way, tell EVILFROG9 to take a flying kite...what an ignorant soul. Good luck.

If he isn't walking I probably wouldn't put him in a toddler bed till he can, for saftys sake. If you and he really think he needs one, there are always guard rails you can install. Maybe a new blanket or new crib sheets would make his current bed more inviting?
