The issue of gambling has totally to do with being a good steward of what God lets you use of His. After all, it ALL belongs to God. When we all die, there is not a single one of us that takes their bank account with them. I haven't seen a single casket yet that had a safe attached to it. Nor is the soil of their property holdings on the inside of their casket. It stays right here. God just passes it on to someone else. Hopefully, your next of kin.
Nope, not a bit of it goes with us. It all belongs to God. He lets us use it while we are here. The best way to increase your income is to give your 10% as God requires and watch Him give you increase right back. The more you give, the more He gives back. You just cannot outgive the Lord. If you waste your earnings on a chance winning, you are not investing in God's Kingdom Building Business.
Most importantly, gambling is flat out telling the Lord that you don't trust Him enough to provide for you or that you aren't satisfied with what He's given to you. That is called being ungrateful. When we are grateful, we honor God. He turns right around and doubles His giving. He loves thanksgiving. Just like we all do.
We Americans are such a blessed people! We have no idea how fortunate we are. We are constantly dissatisfied with what we have. It's never enough. Our car isn't good enough. Our home isn't good enough. We don't make enough money. Our clothes are fashionable enough. Our jobs aren't good enough. Our tv's aren't new enough. Our computers aren't fast enough. And it just goes on and on. Face it, we can ALWAYS find something just a little better than what we've got.
God needs people who will be satisfied with what they have. Then, He sends blessings that we are not even able to hold. I'm living proof of it. And I thank Him for every single thing He's ever given me. I would never dishonor Him by wasting His money on a chance of nothing when I could give that same dollar to someone who desparately needs it. That, I think, is what it really boils down to. Focusing our attention on the giving and not the receiving.

I don't think a christian would go to hell for buying a lottery ticket, but I think that anything that becomes a habit can be bad. So, if a person spends all his money on these things and it becomes a habit and causes a problem for a person, then it becomes a hinderance.

If this causes a person to stumble, definitely NO! Let's see, five tickets for a chance to win a cool $200 mil. When all is said and done, would you tithe this winnings? What would you do after you win? Would you quit your job and hang it for a few years? 2 Thess 3:10 says, if a man doesn't work, neither shall he eat.
If it is a raffle for a radio or a new car, as long as you can provide the firstfruits (10%) and give to the Lord, I believe it can be accepted. But not when greed or overindulgence can overrule your walk with God.
It can become your idol.

The Bible does not specifically prohibit gambling. However, most people play the lottery (and gamble in other ways) in the hope of making quick money without having to work to earn it, which is contrary to what the Bible teaches.
The article I've linked below makes a very clear and persuasive case against committed Christians engaging in gambling:

As Christians, we need to realize that the gospel is caught a lot more easily than it is taught. We need to strive to make sure that our behavior matches our beliefs, as the most effective witness is someone who actually lives out their Christian beliefs.

I do not think buying a lottery ticket, after all in the Old Testament that they drew lots for land and in other decisions to keep it impartial and fair. If you spend money that should be spent on essentials or your tithes then I think that it would be wrong in that case.

Sure it is. Could be a blessing. As long you don't over do it and have EXTRA cash to do it with and money left over after you've bought the ticket. Family first, then extracurricular activities second.

only if buying one for me. Come on. If a christian can drink, (hey, Jesus did it) why can't they puchase a ticket. I don't think God (if he exists) invented fun just so we could abstain. But then again there was that situation with the apple tree.

There is no right or wrong about it. But the odds are so much against you. There are some very greedy people in government getting rich off our, "but what if I win?" thoughts. They certainly know how to use and manipulate us to meet their own ends.
