More or less the bare essentials.

I remember that brought a good deal of books and clothes, but that's about all I had room for. Unless you're getting into a place that allows you to have your own room to yourself, you'll have another person living with you, have two beds and two closets already in the room, and you'll possibly already have a desk built into the wall.So I don't recommend any furniture or book cases, as most rooms are less than 20' X 20' without the furniture already installed.

Make sure and bring things to decorate with as well. Many dorm Rooms are painted in old, ugly, drab colors that are none to pleasing to the eye. My room as I recall was "Sea foam Green"..and I hated it. My answer? Lots of Posters and Art Prints. Even some Rope lighting to put around the edges of my half of the room. But, be aware that you don't want to over decorate. Your room is already small enough, and lots of extra decorations may get in the way of what free space you have left. Plus, your room mate may hate your decorating taste, and you don't want to create conflict where none need exist, so be mindful of their feelings.

Also a number of dorms also have rules (sometimes mundane) that go along with being able to live there. Mine I know allowed no candles or incense. Odd, but I guess a type of fire hazard they didn't need. Same with hot plates. You should also know that Dorms are very strict about alcohol and drug paraphernalia. Don't bring a cool bong or awesome liquor bottles you want to display, even if you never actually use/used them. They're considered contraband and you'll get into big trouble for their display. Also no firearms, either. I know this is a kind of "duh" answer, but I know of some dorms in the Midwest (like my godsister's dorm in Minnesota) that have gun lockers specifically for their resident students and request that there be no firearms in the rooms.

Beyond that, bring a good attitude, the knowledge that you'll be living in a community atmosphere, and earplugs so that the jackasses who stay up until 4 AM in the Hallway won't bother you so much.

I think that just about covers everything.

Bring lots of going out clothes. You'll be amazed how much you go out to parties freshman year.

Bring lots of plastic storage containers- dorm rooms are small, so you need to make the most of your space.

Bring Febreeze- it's a life saver when you don't have change to do laundry.

Monica, congratulations! bring your computer, tons of quarters, and a stash of edibles. A couple of changes of linen, a warm blanket and bedspread, your mp3 player or other portable music source. A favorite pillow and if applicable, stuffed animal. Pictures of your loved ones. That's about enough. Leave the video games at home. Stay focused on your studies and get out into activities so you can make friends and find good study partners. Good luck !

make sure you bring alot of quarters lol.. for the laundry machine..but depending on your college or university. storage boxed that can be under the bed because dorms aren't that big. i small tv if you want, a little fridge, extra long twin sheets (usually standard size for dorm beds.. at my university at least)... flip flops for showers... umm the necessities ... clothes ..but ur main things are storage cuz theres limited space.

A small refrigerator--rent or buy one. If you are a coffee drinker, something to heat water. Are small microwaves allowed? A "backrest" pillow for reading/studying. CD player/radio. Something to carry your shower supplies (shampoo, soap, etc.). A calling card or cell phone. A computer, if possible. A plastic underbed storage container comes in handy in limited space areas. But, most of all, self-confidence, good judgment, flexibility, patience, friendliness, and a sense of humor. Oh, and maybe earplugs.
