Today the scientists believe they have found a chemical explanation behind this behaviour. The reason that there are so many of us craving chocolate – not bacon, marshmallows or biscuits – is that chocolate has an exceptional high amount of phenylethylamine.
Phenylethylamine plays a vital role when we fall in love and feel passion, and the phenylethylamine levels peaks during orgasm. Chocolate has always been associated with love and the cocoa bean was considered an aphrodisiac by the Maya and Aztec cultures more than 1500 years ago. So, it comes as no surprise the phenylethylamine once discovered soon became popularly know as 'the love drug'.

The scientific name for the plant from which chocolate is produced is cacao theobromos - and theobromos means "food of the gods".
Chocolate ia made from cacao beans and contains a chemical called theobromine. Thebromine effects the production of serotonin and endorphins in the brain. It literally makes you feel good. Cacao also contains some caffiene, which acts as a neurostimulant.
The MesoAmericans who originally used chocolate roasted the beans, ground them up, steeped them in water and made a cold drink from them: the theobromine and caffiene were enough on their own to make people feel good. When Europeans tried it, they also added sugar and cream to the mixture, making it even more potent.
But the specific feel-good chemical is still just theobromine. Good stuff.
