The "root" password is the password of your system's Super User or Administrator account.

The root user is one who has unlimited access to your system files and settings. It is the most important account on your system, therefore the password for the root account should be a good one - not easy to guess by non-root users.

On a Linux system, to change a user's (non-root) password, log in as root, open up a virtual terminal window and type the command: passwd {username} and press enter (replace username with the name of the user you wish to change the password for). You'll be asked for a new password for that user.

On a unix/linux system, root is the name of the administrator accout. Root is immune to file permissions and can do pretty much whatever he pleases. Root can even change other users' passwords using the 'passwd' command.

But if you don't have the root password, you're not root. Too bad. Contact your system administrator to reset your password for you.

Root is the superuser account on unix-based systems. It's usually the account used to run processes that need administrative rights.

If you're trying to log in as root, you're doing something wrong. You should never run as root... use su and run whatever commands you need to, but logging in and running as root is asking for trouble.

If you don't know your root password, either it's time to rebuild your box, or you don't have root on the machine for a reason (usually, you're not the system administrator). If you're a user on someone else's system, you should ask them for help.
