seems like that would save alot of lives, or at a minimum make it easier to find all the bodies. Yeah, i know i got too much time on my hands, but some one has to think about this stuff.

Building a plane is a complex matter. You cannot just use one material and think it is ok. The plane goes through temperature extremes, from the ground to height. It also need engine powerful enough to push it to speed to fly, and being too heavy will be a big problem. So a compromise need to be made. The black box is made to withstand impacts of crashes and to safeguard the equipment inside. It is designed compact so as not to be heavy. So this is not required for the entire aircraft, otherwise you will see many more engines on a plane and this will mean you pay more for the fuel to be used.

even a blackbox has limitations...if a plane were to be made out of the same material, it'd be too heavy and not very profitable.. there's no material that's crash-proof..given the energy that's involved...
