The jeep is runing okay , but excessive black smoke comes out the tailpipe. Its in the shop now and they keep checking everthing they can and they think they found the problem and let it run for a while and its okay. turn off the jeep and start it back up in a few minutes and there the black smoke is again and again.

Black smoke means it's running rich. If it has a carb, it needs adjusting, if it's injected, it could be the ECM, the O2 sensors, the injectors, the air flow sensor or a variety of other things.

And you are not burning oil... Oil makes blue-white smoke.

It's not carbon buildup either. Carbon buildup leads to rough idle and detonation. Chemicals to remove carbon buildup do nothing, you have to take the engine apart to get rid of it.

The leaky injector theory is starting to be my favorite.

Sounds like one of 2 things.
O2 Sensors or MAP sensor.
Check those things. To find out if it's the O2 sensors you have to get the car to rev up past 2000 rpm.
I had a 91 pontiac that did that and I changed the MAP sensor, still heavy black smoke.Revved the car up past 2000 rpm and found the O2 sensors bad.Changed the O2 sensors and problem fixed.

You could also have leaking injectors. When you shut off the vehicle. The injectors can leak gas into the cylinders. Then when you start it. Black smoke comes out and eventualy clears up.

You are burning oil. Your rings are shot on the cylendars.

Get to a better mechanic, preferably a reputable dealership for diagnostics.
