The smartest way to go for buying a used car is through the personal ads in your local newspaper. Used car dealerships offer a veneer of reliability on their cars, but in reality their prices are much higher and their vehicles are in no better shape than cars sold by private owners. You will get a much better car for your money, meaning a more recent model with less mileage than you could get from a dealership. One way to be sure of the car you're purchasing before you buy from a private owner is to examine the records they have of the car and to make sure they own the title and it is not a salvaged vehicle. Also, if you are serious about purchasing a car you see, have it checked out by a reliable mechanic before you buy.

You want to make sure to consult the Kelly Blue Book value of each used car you look at to make sure their prices are fair and reasonable. Also, if I can make a suggestion, I would highly recommend a Honda such as a Civic. They are reliable, dependable, and get good mileage. They're fairly common, too, and your teenager won't be embarassed to drive it around like he or she would if you bought a Volvo or something. You could probably get a 1991 or later for what you're offering. Good luck.
