Too many people end up in the same boat as you. They buy a vehicle knowing full well what the performance is, then somewhere along the line, they decide they need to beef it up and waste a ton of time and money senselessly.
Now the first question to ask is why? Why is it so important? Why are you worried about racing on the road? Why race from red lights? That's what track days are all about, and that's also where you find people who really want to see that stuff. On the street, you'll only attract the wrong kind of attention.
Now back to your truck. If you have a special attachment to the truck, and a whole lot of cash and another vehicle for the duration of the time the truck will be off the road, then you should transplant a larger engine. See the trick with transplants is to create a "sleeper". This is a vehicle that looks stock, but shocks the hell out of people when it comes out of the chute. If you chrome it up, light it up and bling bling it all, then those who don't laugh, will only want to challenge you. And again, it's a magnet for the wrong attention. (ie// police, bling haters and jealous types).
I have no idea how old you are, or how much spare cash you have, but you should really look at getting a vehicle with a mix or factory power, factory bling and factory style. There is a lot to be said for a sharp looking luxury sedan. Take my Lincoln LS for example. 4 liter Jaguar engine, tough looking, stylish and comfortable. It gets attention for the right reasons. And it has plenty of balls. There are a ton of trucks out there with the same criteria right out of the factory.
You have to consider, how much of your driving time are you using trying to race people, and how much are you using travelling to and from places? Who do you buy the vehicle for anyhow? You or everyone else?
Bottom line, get something you love and enjoy driving.
I have my Lincoln and a mint, stock 69 Porsche 911. There are plenty of vehicles out there that can beat either in a straight line. Who cares? At the end of the day, I enjoy driving them, and I know there are more people admiring them than any of the rice-mobiles trying to vie for pole position.

well the easiest thing would be to buy a computer chip for your truck. that should give you 20-30 more horsepower. now, if your getting smoked at the light, im assumming you have an automatic or just horrible at driving a stick. if it is an automatic, then i would invest in a shift kit. After that change your rearend gear, or a new exhaust, or a new air intake system. O yea!! a k&n airfilter is fairly cheap and should give you 10-15 more horsepower. The possibilities are endless and so is the amount of money that you could dump in it. If your wanting to race and ready to spend money, it would probably be more money efficient to invest in a diff car. and u mentioned little cars beating you? thats because their power to weight ratio is lower than yours and that is the most important figure out of any when it comes to being fast. i hope my information was helpful and i wish you the best of luck from one dodge fan to another.

Buy a SRT10 full size Dodge truck. Then you can smoke 'em. I have a 92 Dakota with v6 magnum and it does ok. But if I were to do anything, I would go with the SRT10.

Well first power mods should always be exaust, air intake, and a new chip/programmer. after that evrything from cams and internal components, to Superchargers and Nitrous kits are awsome. seriously though, unless u are like emotionally attached to your V-6 Dakota, just eiter swap in a V-8 or trade up for a V-8 truck.

Nine times out of ten a 4 banger will always beat a 8 cylinder due to power and weight ratio,if your looking to wax the 4 bangers then your going to need some serious cash,I would recommend buying a turbine supercharger which cost around $3,000-$6,000 dollars.Having a fast car isn't cheap, but if you want to do it the easy way then if you cant beat them join them.

Well. Alter your drive line..i'm assuming this is a pickup....get the gears redone in your rear end and transmission....helps on the drive line a bit there. Allot of these kids spend lots of money on these hondas....which is sad....my bros 79 fire bird eats corvettes and the new mustangs...Just need find a decent mecanic that does race cars and he'll set ur drive line up..then work on the motor to get more hp out of it.

it all depends on how "fast" you want your truck to be. i would start out with a cold air intake, headers, exhaust, and a cpu chip. then you can move into the engine get a ported throttle body, ported intake manifold, and port the heads. it that still isnt enough for you, then buy a supercharger or turbo. if those are too expensive, then try cheater spray (nos).
hope this helps.

Sell your truck and buy a faster car. Truck's aren't generally made to be racecars.
