if they are young, I put them in their crib, or playpen where I know nothing will hurt them, and go sit and calm down. Getting time to take a breather, and walk away from the situation seems to give me a chance to calmly collect myself, and remember that no matter what, when they are grown and moved out, i will miss moments like this.

Well while a lot of people still stand by counting to ten or leaving the room until you can collect yourself, I think the thing to always keep in mind with children (and even adults for that matter) is that life is a learning process and each of us is wandering around unsure of the world around us and the expectations put upon us. We're not perfect. And with children there is a whole world of wonder out there that has no limitiations and often no rules. This wonder will be driven out of them by the time they are adults like us but surely we don't need to rush it with anger and frustration. Let them make their mistakes and learn but show them that the world and it's rules can still have wonder and kindness.

Count to ten and tell them to go to their rooms until I can figure out my emotions. I don't have kids but I've babysat for a whole lot since I was 10 years old. I have a pretty effective "look" I give a kid when I'm being serious and they are crossing a line they shouldn't be crossing. I also communicate what is to be expected of them and if they decide to push, then no fun time for them.

I tell them I am about to lose my temper and then I explain to them very clearly why!
Good communication is essential to any good relationship! I have found that by being completely honest in this way, my temper subsides.

Well, other than actually loose it, and then later regret it, I go to another room and try to regroup. I realize that if they are doing something wrong, it's usually just a reflection of what I have consciously or unconsciously taught them. Just get yourself to somewhere that you can take a few deep breaths and adjust your attitude. If you're successful, it makes you feel great. If not, it stinks. Good luck.

When I'm about to lose my temper I ask my son to give me 5 minutes because mommy needs a time out. He understands because he knows all about time outs.

Before I say anything out loud, I say to myself, "he's only _ years old." That helps me remember that (1) he's still just a kid, so he's not perfect at doing everything right (yet) and (2) if I blow up at him, I'll probably scare him more than I mean to. That, and a deep breath, usually help.

Don't let it get that far. Stay steady and show them who's boss. Better to start young, but it's never to late if they're under your roof. I used to joke around and tell people when I get mad I would kick the cat. The main thing is children need to know that they are loved.

WHEN MY CHILDREN WERE SMALL I WOULD TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND TELL THEM WHEN I'M NO LONGER THIS MAD WE WILL DEAL WITH THE PROBLEM FOR THEM TO THINK ABOUT WHAT THEY DID AND THEN WE WOULD TALK ABOUT WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN BUT IT WOULD BE LATER AND NOW I'M DOING THE SAME WITH MY GRANDCHILDREN AND IT WORKED WITH THEM ALL SO FAR THE WORST THING THEY HATE FOR ME TO DO WHEN I GIVE A PUNISHMENT I WOULD SAY UNTIL I SAID THEY WERE OFF OF IT AND DIDN'T GIVE A TIME LIMIT AT THE TIME IT WAS GIVEN THEY HATE THAT
