I depends. When I had my top ones out it really wasn't that bad. Not much swelling as all a little soreness. But when I had my bottom ones out it was bad i was in pain for a while.

I had all 4 of mine taken out at once. I was put under for the procedure. I did have pain, but the meds they gave me made me sleepy so it wasn't so bad. I have to admit that when the meds where off the pain sets in... so make sure you take as directed and don;t miss! I also had some swelling and bruising. You will be limited to food such as soup, pudding, mashed potatoes etc... the you'll work your way up to soft food like eggs. make sure you get your self lots of ice cream! Also, I would do it when you can relax for a few days. I did mine on a Thursday.. took off work Thursday and Friday and had the weekend to recover. Good luck!

The noise when the tooth is popped out and the amount of swelling really surprised me. I did not have much pain compared to some of the other responses. My advice : buy cold soft foods - pudding, applesauce, etc. and pick up the pain medicine before you make the trip to have the tooth pulled.

To quote Clubber Lang from Rocky III
"Pain"
Bleeding for about 12 hours, lots of gauze.
I had to drive 120 miles with my mother to get all four pulled at one time. They said I shouldn't drive due to the xenocane (stronger version of novacaine). My mother got lost on the way back, ended up driving the final 80 miles while replacing gauze in my mother every 10 miles.
Never will forget it.
Hope I didn't scare you. Not as bad as it sounds.

When I had mine removed they gave me a pill to take the morning before I went in to have my wisdom teeth removed.
I took the pill went to the oral surgeon and they gave me a IV
Then some meds and I was out of it. Not like being put to sleep real deep like in operations but enough that I was out of it!
Then they wake you up and your sore and sleepy
You are in the bed the 1st day. Ice bags you put on your face then the heating pad. The next day you still hurt....But not as bad as one of those BAD toothaches.
Then about the 3rd day you normal but sore and you can't eat for a while...

Don't let any of these horror stories scare you,it's no big deal.the first time i had sodium pentothal and was knocked out cold for my lower ones(big mistake),five years later i had the uppers out with just novocaine and a little nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and i was actually laughing and told the oral surgeon,go ahead, pull them all.i needed no pain medication whatsoever.like my granfather told me at the time, just go get it done...he was right!

The noise is the worst part. Be sure to bring an ipod, disc man or something...and play the loudest songs you have!
