I got engaged about 6 months ago, and I have realized how much better looking my diamond is when it is super clean. I have started cleaning it with what smells like an amonia based cleaner (the store that sold my fiance the ring gave it to him with the purchase), When I say clean, I mean I soak it for a few minutes in the cleaner and gently clean it with the soft brush that came with it. Is it possible that I am damaging my diamond, or would the store have mentioned that? How about the white gold, could that be getting damaged?

You will not damage your diamond by cleaning it. It sounds like you are cleaning it right by only soaking it for a few minutes. You can also use Windex with a little added ammonia, or Mr. Clean with ammonia. Either one will work just as well.

The only problem I could see with cleaning it very often is that the brush could wear off the rhodium plating on the white gold faster than with less cleanings. This does not mean that the gold is discoloring, just the natural, slightly yellowish color of the white gold is showing through. White gold does have a yellow tinge to it since it is made of a mixture of gold (yellow) and alloys (white). It gets rhodium plated (rhodium is a member of the platinum family) to give it the really bright white color. It is completely normal for it to wear off over time, and there are other factors besides over-cleaning. Some people need to re-rhodium a ring every few months, and on others it will last a few years.

One thing a lot of jewelry stores will not tell you, however, is to take your jewelry off before you go swimming or go in a jacuzzi. Over time the chlorine will weaken the gold and make it more prone to breaking, especially the prongs. Same thing if you are using any type of harsh cleaners.

I have worked in jewelry for several years now, and I wish more of our customers were like you. You would be amazed at how many people do not clean their jewelry at all. Some of it even looks alive...it's disgusting. Keep it up, and not only will your ring keep looking beautiful, but you will make some jeweler very happy if/when they have to work on your ring.

VERY good question! Can you call the store you got the ring from? I know my jeweler sells the cleaner, but they do a steam cleaning whenever I go in for my cleaning. What if you alternated that?

I don't know if the chemicals might cause the white gold to discolor earlier or not....
