This all depends on the number and size of files you wish to transfer.

Smaller files: I'd just e-mail it to your friend
Large files: I'd use an FTP client and a web server, or use the fish:// protocol if you're fortunate enough to be Linux users.

If you don't have access to a file server, then I'd use the USB storage device method. You have to physically move the USB device between PCs, but at least you're not as limited on size and number of files to transfer.

Myself, I just do remote logins with the use of Konqueror and the "fish://" protocol. Simple, quick, and FREE!

Connecting the computers via USB (2.0) cable or Firewire. Ethernet cable is pretty fast but make sure you get a "crossover" cable if you're connecting the computers directly to each other or else it won't work. Here's something that might be useful for you http://www.mycableshop.com/techarticles/connecting2computers.htm
