You should not open it and you should not destroy it either as this is a federal offense. The USPS suggest you mark the envelope "Not at this address" and place it back in a mail collection box.

Write RETURN to sender--doesn't live here/moved
and put it back into your mailbox or drop it off at the post office.
That's all you can do.
They may have filled out a forwarding address postcard, but forwarding does expire eventually.
The post office is only doing their job--don't take it out on your mail person. Just keep sending their stuff back!

You can talk to the mail man. I know because we have live at our place for 1 year and still get stuff from the previous tenant! Try also putting the mail in the outgoing box, so the post office worker can take it.

When I get such mail I write on the envelope that those people have moved. If I know their new address I write it on the envelope too. Then I return it to the post office and it gets sent either to the new address or back to the sender.

When I'd just moved, I told the former occupants that they kept receiving mail in my house. After a while, they still hadn't changed their address, so I started tossing this mail away. And some time later, I stopped receiving mail. It seems they finally changed their address.

Write moved on it and cross out the address and put it in the post office box. The Post Office will take care of the rest.

Take a red pen and in bold letters put Return to Sender- and if any more of this mail comes, it is going in the trash. Then leave a note in your box telling the postmaster to quit putting in there..if they don't listen, take it in to post office and throw it on their counter and say NO MORE!! Then start tossing it. To me that is even being nice to go that far.

Good question, what you should do is leave a little note in your mail box/compartment that the mail man can see that simply states that you are the current resident and let them know that the office should get it right, using common courtesies of course!
Love You!!

Mark it Return to Sender and put it back in your box or another mailbox. Some of the mail might be very important.

just mark on the envelope not at this address and the letters RTS( return to sender) tell your mail person also, and if that doesn't work file a complaint addressed to the postmaster of your town.
