Going to Hawaii (the Big Island) in August. Know of any good spots or activities? How much does it cost?

I grew up on the Big Island. My opinions are as follows (in no particular order):

1. Visit the volcano
2. Check out Akaka Falls
3. Hike through some Lava tubes (there are some near Kona)
4. Snorkel at Magic Sands Beach (aka Black Sands Beach)
5. Nude Beach
6. Eat at Tom Bombadil's pizzeria
7. Check out the Waikoloa Hilton (used to be the Hyatt and had dolphins that you could swim with ... not sure if they still do that)

Hope this was helpful!

I know good spots...

Don't know where you plan to stay, but if you have a few bucks, the Mauna Lani Bay Resort is the best (5 Star). It has a great private beach, wonderful service and beautiful rooms.

Go to the north part of the island for more beaches with less people, more rural. You can hike and explore.

You can surf, boogie board, there are shops in the south and some good restaurants too. Make sure you see the volcano! They also have an observatory too.

On the Big Island - Go to Volcano National Park - hike the Iki Crater trail, drive down the chain of craters road and watch lava enter the ocean. Go to Akaka falls and rainforest, go to the captain cook monument via sea kayak and snorkel there - buy a cheap disposable underwater to take pictures. check out a different beach each day - some are white, black or even green.

AH you must go and visit National Volcano Park

You also can go to the Maunaloa Macadamia Nut factory. Good to ask the people at the airport when you first land for the vistor guides. You also have to check out the cold water pond. Don't forget to check out Hamakua also.
But thats bout all I got for you.

Good luck and have fun.
