I think it's a euphoric vision by a charismatic leader.

They all believe they are the only right ones. As far as charismatic leaders, well, a lot of things are accredited to people who never spoke it or done it.

You're probably right about the euphoric vision, but I think it's also an intolerance to accept that any other way might be right. They have to be the ONE religion, and all others are false. I know this is not how I believe as a Wiccan, but we are talking the major religions here.

They were created to control mankind. To give hope for the "hereafter" and to provide guidelines for the barbarians who could not control their own greedy and selfishness. I disagree with most organized religion because I think it is mostly made up of lies for the above reasons and for the rulers over the ages to acquire and keep their wealth, as well as other reasons. I want to add - I believe there is a GOD and there is rebirth. I just don't believe the crap we are feed by mainstream religion.

They all have The Golden Rule in common. Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs, Baha'is, Christians, Muslims, Jews, Zoroastrians, Wiccans, and the like.

Most major religions have the same god in common. Islam, Christianity, Judaism, "as well as Samaritanism and the Bahá'í Faith." (Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judaism)

I believe it was Thoreau who said that "table manners exist so we don't kill the others at the table with us." Religion exists a way of creating unity among a people and helping them to co-exist. This of course backfires when people of different religions try and co-exist in the same area because they often try and force their beliefs on one another.

There is also the element of trying to explain the unexplainable. We as humans are always asking why and religion answers that question for most.

Creation, a creator, commandments, prophets, and a definite way the world will end. Also, the absolute belief people have that 'their' religion is the correct one.

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you", (i.e. the golden rule) exists in one form or another in just about every religion I've ever heard of, and probably some I haven't.
