Hi,
This sentence - which, despite some answerer's comments, is very often said - is a very valuable sentence because it gives us a lot of insight into the believer's mind. It's my belief that somebody who grows up in a very insular 'fundamentalist' house often tends not to develop an independent sense of right-and-wrong. There must be exceptions, of course, but a lot of people refrain from killing, stealing, coveting and wearing mixed fabrics not because they've ever objectively considered the right-and-wrong of these actions but merely because 'God told them not to'. 'Hell' is the equivalent of 'wait till your father gets home' - but the difference is that the latter is only applicable for children who don't have a fully-formed concept of actions and repercussions.
For somebody whose definition of 'good behaviour' is based solely on what they read in a book, it's quite logical for them to presume that an atheist would not engage in good behaviour. The unfortunate implication is that, for these people, they would freely murder, rape, steal, pillage and wear mixed fabrics if it weren't for God's decree against those actions. Furthermore, they see murder as bad not because a person's life has been lost and his/her family torn asunder but merely because the perpetrator 'sinned' against God. Would you trust such a person with your child?
Lastly, what objective conclusion can you draw about the morality of a person who says 'A sin is a sin - lying and killing are equal in the eyes of God'? What conclusion can you draw about the morality of a deity who would believe that?

Well, let's see.
1. I don't violate the first commandment as I don't worship any other gods.
2. I don't violate the second because I don't have any graven images... not even a Darwin Fish.
3. I try not to take the Lord's name in vain... why damn something by god if god doesn't really exist?
4. Keep holy the Sabbath Day? Oops, okay one down
5. Honour mom & dad? Check.
6. No killing? Check.
7. No adultery? I'm not married and I'm not fooling around with any married chicks, check.
8. No stealing? Check.
9. No false witness? Check.
10. No coveting.... I'm non-materialistic, so check!
I sin 1 out of 10. Not bad. I'm sure that there are many other christians who "Sin" a lot more than I, a simple atheist.

How can an atheist "sin" if they don't believe in God? All people regardless of beliefs will do bad things, simply because we are human. However, if you think about it, Atheist have the chance to be better people than some Christians. Many Atheist do the right thing all the time, because they truly believe in doing the right thing, not because there is the threat of hell hanging over their heads.
Note: I'm not atheist or Christian, but I do believe that people have the right to believe whatever they want to believe without judgment.

You know, to God, it's all sin. A little white lie or the Holocust, it's all sin that seperates us from God.
One transformation that occurs when you become a Christian, if you're belief is real, is that your life will change. This is part of the 'born again' experience. Activties that you may have enjoyed in the past will lose their luster. Dirty jokes will no longer funny. So it's reasonable to say that after someone has accepted Christ, they will sin less.
But one must not loose site of the fact that it doesn't matter! Our sin, even tiny, seperates us from God, which is why Jesus died on the cross. He was the only one who was able to pay our debt.

You know what the problem is? I find that a lot of people who have a "faith" tend to look down on those who either do not have one or who do not share the same faith. My mother in law, for example, picks and chooses what and when to believe but curses me for not believing the same. God did not say, "Grab your highlighter and pick ONLY 5 things to follow and whatever else does not apply" Either take your faith as one or shut the f**k up. Agree?
Everybody "sins". No matter who you are or what you believe.

If a christian is in a foxhole, would the seen the only thousand's of Gods/Goddesses that they don't have faith exist enter their minds? Then why would the christian God enter an atheist's suggestions? the reason this is irrational is as a results of the fact the "believer" can no longer think of "nonbelief" yet optimistically this scenario brings some awareness of what "nonbelief" feels like once you think approximately the failings you do not have faith exists. we are the two atheistic in direction of a itemizing of Gods, my record purely incorporates one extra God than your record.

I've drawn a blank on that one sorry, I think atheists who weren't brought up properly or rebelled too much would sin more but then again, a christian etc. in the same situation would probably do the same stuff and then pop to church and say, hey sorry God, the atheist doesn't have to do that bit.

It's a totally ridiculous notion, that has no basis in fact. I am accountable to myself and the people in my life that I love. I don't need to have an unseen entity threatening eternal damnation if I don't do what "it" says! Our society is so screwed up- now more than ever; crime, violence, people lying and cheating, high divorce rate. etc. It's very ironic because something like 78% of Americans believe in God. Go figure...

An atheist doesnt thank the creator.
So even if there should be an atheist who doesnt sin more than a believer, then just being ungrateful would make him a worse person than the believer.

you know what i think is funny? how these religious types have created systems where obtaining moral perfection is completely impossible. so if i'm a sinner, what's stopping me from sinning more? oh i forgot, they have "classified" certain types of sins to be worse or better than the other ones. so if i lie about 8 million times, isn't that worse than killing someone once?
it's all stupid twisted logic. the idea of sin, like the idea of religion, just exists to control the masses. it's all BS if ya ask me.
