The answer is 8, unless there are scratches. While horse races can accomodate more horses, it is the standard at greyhound tracks to only have 8 spots in the starting cage for dogs.

Who cares?
Perhaps one day Greyhounds will not be considered "livestock" in the many states where they now race. Our rescued and retired racer is missing part of ear and the vet thinks he was kicked in the ribs and it was never treated..so a bone sticks out. The former owner ran out of money so the dogs were starved. His brother had to have toes amputated. These are in cages for 23 hours a day. At one track the AC broke and many dogs died because they are considered livestock. In Florida when a dog can no longer race they shoot them because it cheaper than a needle. Please think before you support Greyhound racing.
