I prefer Brewery Ommegang, based in Cooperstown, New York. They are a fantastic Belgian-style brewery and, unlike most American breweries, they don't overhop their beer. Their brews are all very flavorful and smooth, with excellent color and aroma.
My favorite beer of theirs is "3 Philosophers". I was able to talk to Randy, one of the brewers at Ommegang, during the Cleveland Ale Fest back in 2005. He told me the story behind the beer:
Brewery Ommegang held a contest where the contestant had to write an essay about the ideal beer. The winning essay would be choosen by the brewers, and they would try to brew that essay into a drinkable form. It took them a while, and they just couldn't seem to get something they wanted... Until one of the brewers dumped a bottle of Lindeman's (or perhaps Liefman's?) Framoise into the experimental batch. That finished off the flavor and I daresay it is one of the finest beers I have experienced.
There are a lot of breweries in the US, but few have the subtlety that Ommegang does. A large portion of the US micros think that hops are everything and dump them in with abandon. It's really quite sad, as it covers up flavors that can be had from the malts, adjuncts, yeasts, and water character.
I would have to agree with another poster that Victory is also very good, but they're second on my list. (o:
