There was a whole assimilation movement during the early 1900's and many people were falling away. This may be why G-d brought the holocaust. There are several reason why it may have happened but its important to note that when G-d punishes man and makes him suffer - G-d is in much more pain himself. He loves us and decided its important though it pains him a lot. Its like when a parent smacks a child that is not behaving. The parent doesnt really want the child to hurt. Its just that the child is not behaving and the way he can express his pain and teach the child a lesson is by smacking him. It hurts the parent even more to do that. Here are some possible reasons:
1) Where was G-d? He was right there with us! Just ask any person who survived the concentration camps or ghettos (like my grandparents did). There is no way that they were able to survive without the countless miracles that G-d did to save them. My grandmother goes on for hours talking about. It is fascinating - some of them were open miracles. We dont understand why G-d chose to save some and not others. My grandmother was the only one out of her extremely large family who survived. Maybe it was because she was destined to have children. She is the matriarch of a huge family of 60 children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
G-d was there and he did everything with a purpose. There were no mistakes. Those who he decided to should survive, did so. Unfortunately, others were meant to die. This does not excuse their killer - they will be punished. They did not have to be the ones to step up and do his dirty work.
2) We sinned greatly and some people had to be sacrificed. It pained G-d greatly to do that but better be in physical pain than spiritual loss.
3)It says that before the Messiach comes there will be a great war "melchames gog imogog" where all the people who will be unfit to enjoy the blessings of Messiach will die. (as in Egypt - 4/5 of the Jews were killed before G-d took them out of Egypt. The ones who didnt believe in him or sinned did not get to come with). Some Rabbis believe that there will be 1 great war before his arrival. Others say that 1 war would be too harsh, so instead G-d broke it up into several smaller wars - the Holocaust would be considered one of them. If this is the case then G-d was indeed doing us a favor by splitting it - it would ultimately happen anyway.
4) The base of our faith is to know that everything that happens happens for our good. Many times we dont see how it can possible be for our good - but it always is. There are stories about people - terrible things happened to them and it was only years later that they realized that it was for their own good.

God was probably watching and enjoying the whole thing. Read the Old Testament, about how he was always ordering the slaughter of the Midianites, the Perizzites, the Amalekites, etc., even including the babies and women. BibleGod always loved a good sacrifice. I expect the Jews did something really bad and God punished them for it, just as he did when he allowed the Egyptians to enslave them for 400 years, and then made them wander in the desert for 40 years.

The question should be "where was mankind" to allow such an atrocity. This monster was elected by a democracy!
God was waiting to see who would come forward to stop the slaughter. We certainly failed that test, but we have a 2nd chance in Darfur. Who will come forward to save the Sudanese? Will the "real" Christians come forward this time? (American Jews didn't make much of a showing either!)

The signs were all around at what was coming...Few took them seriously. GOD always sends warnings before world events take place...Take for instance the current IRAN controversy! Instead of getting TOUGH NOW,we beg, plead, throw a bone in order to somehow make them "see the light"--THEY DON'T CARE!!! The same was done for Hitler..."Oh,please don't hurt us,Adolph!" This has NEVER WORKED!!! And we are REPEATING HISTORY all over again! But we don't have a Winston Churchill to warn us today of our impending peril! GOD wake us up before one day we here,"ATTENTION! We are marching onto your borders. If you try anything,we will incinerate you!!!" We STOP Nuclear Distribution NOW or it will STOP US!...GOD help us to wake up!

God gave people of the Holocaust the strenght to survive, and forgive. He knew that from that genocide, we would never forget, and we would always remember
