It sounds like a pyschosomatic injury. Yes, stress can cause this, but there may be more behind it than he is saying. Stick with the psychological treatment. Was he attacked or did something traumatic happen to him in juvi. You may want to press with the questions and find out more about what happened with him. Good luck.

That is not a logical explanation of losing use of a body part. That has never been proven before. Maybe the doctors haven't done enough tests to find out what happened to his leg. Stress can affect a person physically, like making them feel tired, have headaches, etc. but not to the extreme of being paralyzed in a part of the body.

My sister who has suffered from severe depression most of her life appeared to have suffered a stroke, but multiple MRI's, CT scans, blood tests, etc. could find no physical ailment. I agree with the other responses - make sure all of the physical tests have been done and re-done, but stay open to the notion that stress or some other mental illness might be causing the problem. It look a very long time, but my sister was able to regain the ability to walk after finding the right medicine to manage her depression and lots of physical therapy.

well, im no doctor but id say the strees has been applied to a strict area of the spine, most likely a certain nerve but i would think the use will return, i cant say when but i think your son should just stay laying down on a extremly cushioned couch to give him the best chances of recovery, also you defintly should go get a second opinion somewhere else, i know it took them 3 different mri's to finally diagnose me with cancer so you have better chances of finding out if there is a problem or not. hope your son gets well soon though.

the son of a friend of mine experienced something similar -- he was having problems with some kids at school, and the stress contributed to the loss of the use of his legs. after running every medical test known to man, a psychiatrist determined he had conversion disorder. it sounds like this is what your son has, as well. here's some info on it: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000954.htm

if he gets a diagnosis, then you should be able to file for disability to help support him while he can't work.

the best treatment, btw, is a combination of physical therapy and counseling with a psychologist (or psychiatrist) who is familiar with such disorders.

good luck with this!

This is can happen, but it is rare and called Conversion Disorder. But I agree you need to make sure that all the doctors are confident that they have checked him for every other possibility. You can only diagnose Conversion Disorder if there is no other medical explanation for the problem.

Sometimes a person can fake a problem, and that can be hard to tell from Conversion Disorder.

if it is psychological you could try convincing him that some procedure will work. even if it takes several "treatments" and he has a little improvement every time. it could be anything from putting pressure on a certain point on his back to whatever else you can think of. just act like you and the doctor know this is a proven treatment and you would like to use it on him. you have to show confidence in it like you believe it will work or he will see thorugh it.

if it is psychosomatic which it sounds like then only your son can do anything about it. I would smoke weed, play sports or music, to relieve stress. Or anything that works for him. He is lucky to only lose his leg. I think some people stress themselves out to cancer or heart failure... just take a chill pill.

I have heard of hysterical blindness which is a similar condition. Get another opinion to be sure. It seems to me that he would not be able to use either leg if he had this kind of mental problem.
