My dog is a Cocker Spaniel/Dachshund. He's small. He's food crazy. I'll give him a whole hot dog, a piece of bread, or a piece of chicken, which he likes all of those, and he won't eat them, he'll just go take it and bury it in my clothes or my blankets. Not outside in dirt. But if I take that same hot dog, bread or piece of chicken and break it up into smaller pieces, he'll eat it. But the pieces of food I give him are NOT big. Sometimes though, he'll chew the food into smaller pieces and eat them, I know he will, I've seen him do it! What the heck is wrong with him?

There is nothing wrong with him. Dogs sometimes hide or bury bones (for example). The fact that he does eat the smaller portions probably means he just likes to eat in smaller sizes. Dogs just like people have habits some good some bad.

read : More often than not, when animals try to hide their food it's because they do like it and want to eat it, but something going on makes them feel uncomfortable about eating it at that particular time or in that particular place.

He's not weird at all. It goes back to being a pack animal. When there is a large kill, quite often the wolves will take a large portion off to their den, to enjoy later. Your little dog is doing much of the same actions. Smaller pieces must be eaten right away, so that the competition in the pack (you being part of the pack) can't eat it first.

first of all, stop giving your dog people food, it is the leading cause of canine obesity. second, if you must give him people food, break it into bite-size pieces, it is easier to eat. don't you think it would be a little difficult to eat a whole hot dog without your opposable thumbs? i have a weird dog that doesn't chew larger pieces of food, but chews the smaller pieces.

It's normal, he just likes to bury his food for later when he feels hungry, but if it's little, he knows he can't bury it so he eats it. They like to hide and save things for later and do so because they think some other animal might eat it if it's left out.

He thinks the big food is yours, and the small food is his.

I'm dead serious, and it's an endearing thing that he respects your food. Enjoy that he is so thoughtful of you.
