My nephew's pet duckling (an Easter gift) was attacked by another animal last night. By what animal, we don't know. Is there any way to determine if it has rabies, besides taking it to the vet and letting them kill and test it? We'd like to have it treated and keep it.

They can't, to my knowledge, give it a rabies shot once it's already been bitten. I need to know if it can be detected by any other method than killing, as soon as possible. I'm very reluctant to have it killed and tested, as the chance it was bitten by another animal with rabies is small. (Though possible.) I would feel terrible if I killed it and it didn't have rabies, after all.

The normal time to quarantine an animal is usually about 6 months, as it can take that long for the virus to cause clinical signs. I wouldn't be that concerned, as birds are not really affected by the virus, it is just mammals ( warm blooded animals that nurse their young)
I would be more concerned about taking care of the wounds on the duck. Get him to the vet right away, as infection is much more likely from a bite wound. So don't worry about the rabies and testing for it, but get the wounds fixed!

I asked the same question of one of our vaccine representatives. The answer was that the rabies virus has the ability to change it's "identity" over time so coming up with a test for rabies is almost impossible. Unfortunately at this time the only way to positively identify a rabies infection is to test brain tissue from a dead animal.
At this time I think your only choice is to have the pet quarantined (at a veterinary facility not at your home) and afterward they would probably vaccinate the pet.
Good Luck

First off, if there was no blood, then it can't have it. Rabies is transmmited by saliva and blood. If there is any question of rabies whatsoever, take him to the vet and give him rabies shots or in quarintine. And since it trannsmitted by saliva and blood, it's almost impossible to get rabies from a duckling unless it breaks the skin, which I don't think they can do....
But be carefull nonetheless.

Put the animal in a cage and keep an eye on it. If it shows aggressive behavior or any changes in behavior at all, there is a good chance of rabies. Until you know for sure, it is important to stay away from the animal.

they don't kill the canines. they are giving them a chance to come across a house, and there days are not numbered. they don't have till -insert date- to come across a clean domicile or die. it truly is puzzling to completely evaluate a canines personality interior very few days earlier it truly is killed. Edit: a similar quantity of canines at the instantaneous are not being followed out. In kills, there are extra killed then followed any day. In a no kill, those who've an ailment have a chance to get extra effectual and finally end up in a house, the position as in kills, BAM they are sucker-punched with assistance from a needle and are lifeless interior minutes. The look after I volunteer at isn't any-kill, and the canines are not saved in kennels, yet fostered out. The cats are allowed to roam round in an tremendously large room. those who're in cages both prefer to be castrated, or examined for tom cat leukemia (the position they can't are available in contact with different cats), or perhaps even merely because they prefer to heal up somewhat from their undesirable commence in existence. they merely presently outfitted an outside run so the cats can delight in some sunshine contained in the summer season (it truly is all appropriate secured), and a fix room. attempt to discover that in a kill look after. hell, they even castrate and aspects feral cats vaccinations, then enable them go back! i do not comprehend ANY kill shelters that could want to do this.
