Its ROLLER COASTER ride. They paid alot of money and stood in a line for 2 hours and then had fun for 2.5 minutes.

They mean that they've had to deal with a lot of stress and problems which have bombarded their lives over a period of time. Most of them probably ended on a bad note and left the person with a broken spirit. It could also be the person's way of telling u that they never wanna relive those experiences again.
