Good question, even loser's hearts can break.
Look at his friends and how he interacts with the people close to him, especially female family members.
Watch his mood, see if it changes. Date for at least 4 seasons, you can see how his mood changes through the seasons, a lier can't keep a lie going for too long before his true colors come out.
Be careful that you don't hurt the wrong guy, because you may never get a chance to mend their broken heart.

Hardest thing to do! Not only trusting our own judgment but even finding a great guy. (hehe sorry had to, I know it is a struggle for men to find great woman sometimes too)
I think that you need to start learning the signs of great guys, and not great guys. Find out where your lines are.

"He's not that into you" and "Be honest: you aren't that into him either"

You can't. Don't ever be positive even in your own judgement. Life is strange and things are not always the way they seem to be. Lots of players out there and they are good at it. *U*
