pagefile.sys file is how Windows NT handles virtual memory using demand paging. It is essentially a way that the operating system can substitute space on the hard disk for actual RAM.

Read here for more info:http://kb.iu.edu/data/acwa.html

OR, if you aren't using Windows NT, it might be this:

pagefile.sys file is a unique file used by windows to hold temp data as part of the swapping process between physical and virtual memory. It's created during setup in the Root of the boot drive as a hidden file. So my question is Why are you trolling your hidden root directory?!

I agree with the guy who says you should go to MS and search info on it...or google it.....but don't delete it!

If you're running Windows on a PC, Control Panel -- System -- Advanced -- Performance -- Settings -- Advanced -- Virtual memory -- Change

Select the "No paging file" option and click "Set". Reboot is needed for this to take effect. Windows versions other than XP may have a different method, or none at all.

If you do this, and you try to run programs using more memory than you have, they will fail and your operating system will probably crash. But the same menus let you specify paging files on other disks, hopefully with more free space.

To delete the pagefile.sys , I find the most effective method is to remove the hard drive from your computer and smash it to little bits with a heavy hammer. this will also prevent the pagefile.sys from being created again.
