I monitor all music/tv/video/games that my daughter listens to or watches first. I am a big country listener, but even some of that is trashy. If I listen to music with my daughter home or in the car, I usually play my fav local country station. They usually play a good clean mix of songs. If we are watching TV, we usually watch Disney Channel, so that I know what is on there better be okay. That is where my daughter finds most of the music she wants to listen to, and usually I let her. She loves Raven, High School Musical, Hilary Duff, Chettah Girls, and Aly and Aj. She also loves to listen to soundtracks from her favortie movies (usually Disney ones). Right now she is 6 and I am the one resposible for picking her music, but in the next few years she will pick her own music. I help her make the right choices now, I am hoping in the next few years she will keep making good choices.

GREAT QUESTION!!! I am called the Tipper Gore of my neighborhood because I monitor all music that my son listens to first. Some of it practically kills me. But, at least I know it isn't any good.
First look for parental advisory stickers
next listen to music first
tell him you will burn cds with songs on it.........if there is a song from a specific singer that is good however, there are inappropriate ones on the cd.
Watch tv videos for as long as you can take to get yourself updated on some of the music and artists.
Then, pray. No matter how much you monitor or exclude music from their own collection they will listen to it at a friends etc. and still learn the words!

You'll know it's the best choice for music, if you listened to the songs beforehand and made sure the message in the song is something you want to encourage your child to follow. Screen the songs for profanity or any references to violence or things of that nature. Some songs are simple, fun songs with no real message to it so those would be okay for your kids. Just think about the kind of influence the message behind the lyrics of songs could have on your child and make your final decision based on that.

Make them listen to music that inspires righteousness. It could be rock, rap, or classical, just be sure that it really is beneficial to your child's mind. Be sure that the music or song has no bad language or a subject that is too heavy for your kids.

Some compact discs or cassettes have labels that say "Parental Advisory - Explicit Content."

There is also this; Parent's Music Resource Center:

However, around here, I listen to it all. Carefully. When in question, I check the lyrics out online. Oddly enough, we actually usually agree when somethings bad.
