The formula for Dr. Pepper is a combo of flavors made by Robert Sherman Lazenby (1867-1941) (president of DR. Pepper Company for many years is also credited with perfecting the flavor with a blend of 23 fruit flavors.)
Dr Pepper's flavor is allegedly derived from a mixture of soda fountain flavors popular when the drink was first devised. A partial list of these flavors can be seen at the bottling plant in Dublin, Texas; although the formula itself (with its twenty-three ingredients) is a closely-guarded secret. Contrary to a popular urban legend, Dr Pepper does not and never has contained prune juice. [1] In Texas, Dr Pepper is extremely competitive in the soft drink market, regularly outselling Pepsi.

We contacted the Dr Pepper Corporate Communications Department for your answer. It says Dr Pepper's flavor is part of a special formula and that formula is a closely guarded secret. It is a blend of approximately 23 fruit flavors and has it's own "Dr Pepper" category, it is not a cola.

Dr. Pepper is the oldest soft drink in America. It is 1 year older than Coca-Cola and 15 years older than Pepsi. In one year more than 500 million cases of Dr Pepper are sold in the U.S. and it is the 6th largest soft drink in the U.S.

Dr Pepper (they dropped the period after the Dr) has always been advertised as being made from 23 flavors, a secret formula. The only thing we know for certain is that one of the ingredients is NOT prune, despite a persistent urban legend.
