You do not have to wear black, although that is the recognized color for mourning. Dressing in a somber manner is best suited for a memorial service.

I have been to many services and for the most part, people I have seen wear just about anything. Alot of them in poor taste I think, dressing as if they were going to see a movie.
You can wear a black skirt, black pants etc with a top that isn't too eyecatching if you know what I mean or a simple black dress.
You certainly don't have to wear all black if you choose not to.

Do I have to wear black to a memorial service?
Or is it socially acceptable to just wear dress clothes?

It is okay to wear other colors than black to a memorial service: however, the clothing should not be loud or too revealing. Sober and conservative should get you by but always take into account the background the deceased come from. ie. puritan, amish, etc.

No. Black is traditionally preferred in most parts of the US, but other dark colors like dark navy blue, dark dark gray, or dark brown are acceptable alternatives. In some places, white is preferred. But never wear neon, glaring yellow, shocking red, bright fuscia, tangerine orange or other such loud colors. Unless, the family of the deceased requests that you do.

I think wearing dress clothes in any colour is respectable
Although it has been tradition to wear dark colours, I think wearing other colours celebrates the memories and joy that the person who has passed on gave to the world.

You do not have to wear black. Some people will wear something that is in the favorite color of the deceased or if your loved one had a particular outfit they really liked you in...(not lingerie!), do what feels right to you, you are the only one that knows how your loved one felt about it

Black is the color of mourning in our society, but in others purple and even white would be acceptable. I would go with something soft and somber, perhaps not black, but definitely bright. A soft colored dress or a business suit may be the way to go.

You can wear blue if you wanted to, as long as it is a dark color.
Hell, brown or tan is suitable.
You wear colors like that to a memorial service to show respect. If you went to one of them and wear something bright and cheerful, that is telling the person who has lost that person that you could give a sh*t about them and that you are cheerful about their death. The the rat bum motherf@cker should die!
That is what would you would convey to that person who is grieving.
