when they start demanding you go by their rules or else. Do this, do that, God says you should be this way. If it is against the moral of the bible (do unto others) it is a cult. When they start telling you who you can and can't see, what you can and can't do, all in the name of God and the bible. Be true to yourself, be good always, God knows your heart. Religion is a way to make you feel bad and do what the religion of choice says to do. When you go to church on Sunday you are only proving to other 'people' your faith, when it is God you need to prove it too, no one else.
End Rant : )

I have asked this question many times and never really received an answer..All religions seem to start as localized cults but then at some point become religions..So my answer would have to be number of members.. At some point a cult has to many people in it therefore it becomes a religion.

When it stops using brainwashing, thought reform tactics & coercion & permits freedom of choice in belief.

By the way, Alcoholics Anonymous is a very pervasive yet "socially acceptable" cult. It denies being religious, however.

size... I wish there was a better answer and we could determine this with a standard set of ethics... the way our bill of rights USED to work before the Xtian Nazis took over... but size, majority rules. when you get big enough, people start getting scared about bullying you and still calling your group a "crazy cult"

When one isn't manipulated into doing something. NO ONE is manipulated into religion especially not Christianity. It's free will. If you choose to believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is our Savior and he is the only way to heaven then ok, but your NOT going to be forced or manipulated into believing this. We all have free will, it's when this is taken away from us that it could be accounted for as manipulation.

When the power hungry and domineering overlord in charge has brainwashed enough stupid, stupid people in thinking he has any idea he knows what he is talking about and can get them to part with their money to give to him in return to go to a fictional place called heaven. it truly amazes me how many suckers fall for this... we don't really have these kind of extreme right wing things in Britain... Why is that? could be we're not that stupid... it also amazes me how many of these islamic fundamentalists will willingly strap on a bomb and go kill people in the name of Allah... truly these people are a waste of food... They go to heaven if they kill an infidel... who are the infidels? anyone who doesn't believe in their religion of course... should have guessed that one.
