This is a warning for everyone out there. My brother died at 21. He died from an overdose from an over the counter drug called coricidin!! This is a very bad drug. I have been doing some research on it. This drug is VERY addicting, recently I found out that even teenagers have started using this drug recreationally to get high. It has resulted in things such as comas, " zombie- like" behavior (believe it or not) bleeding eye balls and death among many other things. Parents please watch what your children are taking and everyone I am begging you please please do not take coricidin even for a simple cold. There have been reports of very bad reactions even for first time use!!!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coricidin

Coricidin
Coricidin, Coricidin 'D' (decongestant), or CoricidinHBP (for high blood pressure), is the name of a drug marketed by Schering-Plough that contains dextromethorphan (a cough suppressant) and chlorphenamine maleate (an antihistamine). Varieties of Coricidin may also contain acetaminophen (an analgesic/fever reducer) and guaifenesin (an expectorant). The drug is marketed as a remedy for the common cold, especially for people with hypertension, whose high blood pressure may worsen if they take other decongestants.

Recreational use
Coricidin brand cold medicine is often taken in (often much) higher than recommended doses for its dextromethorphan (DXM) content. Since DXM has psychedelic effects in high doses, it is sought for recreational use, but high doses of Coricidin can be toxic. This is because DXM and the other active ingredient, chlorpheniramine, are metabolized by the same liver enzyme. The presence of both chemicals causes competition for the enzyme, and so the DXM remains unmetabolized for longer. Also, chlorpheniramine has anticholinergic activity, which in high doses can cause adverse reactions. An unknown number of people have died from overdosing on Coricidin.

I am sorry to hear about your brother
coricidin isn't normally used to get high but I could see the mix up, there is a practice called robo tripin where you ingest large amounts (4oz or more) of dextromethorphan containing cough syrup. the biggest problem is when uninformed teens try this and use something that has DXM in it but also has other active ingredients this makes it even more dangerous
in this case the other active ingredient is chlorpheneramine.
please take this time to look at the following site http://www.third-plateau.org/dangers/coricidin.shtml

Wow... I'm very sorry to hear that. Thank you for the experience.

Sadly, the FDA can't stop absolutely everything... it must be a tough decision for them to make when it comes to some of these drugs. It's often hard to balance between the risks and the assumes benefits for the rest of humanity. It's always sad to hear when the wrong decision was made.

Once again, I'm very sorry.

Ugh - I think we need a change in the FDA. How does this crap get through? Why is the food industry using Aluminum to keep powdered foods powerdery (like drink mix, similac, kraft cheese powder, etc.) when it has been linked to Autism in children? When will this country start caring more for it's people than it's bottom line?

So sorry for you, and so appreciative of your warning.

What I would love to know, is why and what makes kids willing to risk their lives to get high? I know kids think it won't happen to them, but there's so much information available now that they are inundated with about the danger of any drug, even aspirin, that you'd think they just wouldn't risk it. Scary world for a parent of pre-teens.
